I'd be in like a shot for that.

I'm a huge fan of my Android phones but, with some regret, I don't buy them for the cameras. That's a sacrifice I make for the other functionality. It would be brilliant if I didn't have to.

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

I'll accept it as a response... :-)

Nokia tried to replicate the route Google took with Android by creating the Symbian foundation and making it open source (too little too late IMO) and now members are ceasing to use Symbian in favour of Android.

I'm not suggesting Nokia jump in with both feet, but I feel they would do far better selling Android devices to pull back some of their profits and put that money into Meego and stop wasting their time & money on Symbian high end devices.

Microsoft had the balls to start from scratch again with WM7 and even RIM with the successful yet equally as old BlackBerry OS are starting a fresh with QNX.

I know Nokia are developing Meego but whilst they are doing so they are losing money to the competition....

I'll stop now for fear of repeating, and much worse contradicting myself..... :-)

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

I'd agree with you about folk not knowing about the Symbian OS. They don't see what they're using as Symbian, they just see it as 'a Nokia'. For the Finns, the OS has never been the hero. They've been kind of pushed into this 'our OS is great' corner by the rise of Android, (which in itself is an advanced OS and, thanks to some great marketing and brand positioning, is now the hero part of any Android phone).

Nobody buys an iPhone and says 'I want it for iOS'. Just like no one buys Nokia and remarks on Symbian. It's about experience.

Android is a new beast, an OS championed like a device - so the market is reacting accordingly.

I know that's not much of a response, just a brain dump really :)

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

Nobody is saying that Nokia have to give up on the effort they have put in over the last few years with OVI or Symbian, and it is too early to say whether Meego will fail or succeed, IMO taking over from Maemo it can only do well as it has solid foundations.

The trouble here is that Nokia are worrying too much about how much harm embracing another OS could do to them, whilst their profits are frittering away.

I'll bet that 90% of my friends who own Nokia handsets don't even know what Symbian is, but they have still bought a Nokia because they are solid, quality handsets and have had a Nokia since time began.

A lot of those friends are aware of Android and will probably be buying an Android device for their next purchase, they would probably like that device to be a Nokia for the solid build and quality hardware.....

I just think they are missing out on a way to turn a quick buck, and in turn wasting a lot of effort polishing a turd (Symbian) when Meego will be the OS for their leading smart phones from next year anyway..

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

From a personal perspective, I don't think it would ever happen. For me it's about brand equity; if you look back over Nokia's statements about why they won't go down that particular route, you can see that the brand (and to an extent, control) issue is a key component here.

Whenever you install Android onto *any* device, the OS branding immediately begins to eat away at the hardware around it. You stop having an LG/Samsung/HTC in your hand and you just have 'an Android'.

Combine that with the heavy investments on the services side, you can start to make out the beginnings of a clear (if long) roadmap... and that's just it, they're in it for the long game. These things are cyclical right? Apple came up very quickly, then plateau'd. Android is hitting its upswing as we speak and next? Who knows... Meego? Maybe. We'll see.

I saw a rumour some time back that Nokia were going to develop their service suite for their competitors' devices. It turned out to be a mis-quote but, for me at least, I thought that would've been an awesome move.

Ovi Maps available on Android? Awesome :)

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

It's going to say 'Nokia' at some position on the handset without any doubt. Give it a Nokia and Android collaborative bootscreen and really I think that's all you need, or even, that's all anyone looks at. That's all the branding they need. They shouldn't put a UI layer over it though, the majority of users who I know who have rooted do so to remove Sense or whatever the manufacturer has layered over!

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

Would I use a Nokia Android handset? Yes. It has a few niggles but I quite like my Galaxy S and if Nokia can give me something better, I'd love it.

That being said, how long do you think would it take Nokia to churn out a Android device if they today decide they want to make one? I'm not talking about just porting the stuff over, but complete optimisation as well; assuming they are not designing the device from a scratch. Add to that a new UI layer to at least preserve some kind of Nokia branding or they shouldn't bother with that as well?

Plus, right now the devs think that if they don't do Qt, they're not targeting Nokia at all. But with just 1 Android device (that'll probably even do well) they'll feel that they have a footprint in Nokia too. The moment that happens the momentum that Nokia's building for Qt dies. Once that happens, all their other devices suffer.

They've just made a bunch of money off Android, at the cost of the majority of their Symbian/MeeGo devices.

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

I was saying to @jamesburland last night, with year on year sales down by 40% can Nokia really afford to gamble Symbian V3 and the long awaited Meego, when they have a sure fire winner in Android?

Even if like you say they just use it as a stop gap will it really harm them that much?

Couple all that with the badly marketed N900 which they had already arranged a funeral for before its release.....

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

I missed that point entirely, why not just do it for the sales!

Re: The Nokia/Android debate

If not just to boost their profits they should do it, Android devices are flying off the shelf, outselling the iPhone, BlackBerry and Symbian in the USA. I think this is quite rapidly changing - HTC seem to be on a 12 month cycle for new products, and if they release straight away then it's good for them because they can make more money, but if Nokia announce, then release 6 months later they are releasing what appears to most as an "old" product. They will need to speed up production of new devices if they want to keep up, and simply releasing an N97, N97mini and then a renamed version of the same product probably wont do them any favours.

Re: Google Maps Navigation now available in the UK?

Nice one.
